Self-Promotion?

Ok, so about a month ago I was asked by one of my writing partners, Christopher Metz, to help write some music to a new show that his friend, a lovely guy by the name of Tymothe Claude, called "Beer: The Musical."

Upon hearing the title of the show I was apprehensive. I've been dedicating my work to musicals that I believed were great concepts, and part of my mind couldn't get past that title... "Beer." It just seemed as though it was going to be some stupid frat boy who thought "Hey, I can write a musical." But Chris kept on telling me, "No, it's really funny, just take a look at it before you say no."

Well, upon reading the script, I signed on. I loved it and the title immediately made sense.

So, now the music is finished and the piece is going to be produced at the University of Central Florida. This is my second piece to be produced at UCF and I'm extremely excited. It's going up in March which means it's time for my annual...

SELF PROMOTION!!!!SELF PROMOTION!!! SELF PROMOTION!!! SELF PROMOTION!!! SELF PROMOTION!!!

Come and see this show, it's totally funny and has some cool tunes. I think you'll dig it. I'll give you exact dates and some tastes of what the musical sounds like in the next couple of weeks. If anybody reads this....

New Year

Hi there,
Pretty sure that absolutely nobody has actually read my blog. Pretty sure I'm literally posting this for literally nobody else except myself. But maybe, later in my life, if I ever become something- somebody will see this and be like, "Oh- he was self loathing too way back when."

So, tonight's New Year's Eve. I'm just taking a few seconds, and because nobody else is reading this blog, I can let the self-involved, self-important person that everyone truly has in themselves., to reflect on the crazy experiences that I had in 2009.

2009 might have been one of the best years of my life. It saw many milestones in my career and I had many opportunities this year.

1. This year I played "Toby" opposite Faith Prince as "Ms. Lovette" and Davis Gaines as "Sweeney" in Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street." This was one of the best things that I've ever been able to be a part of. The entire Orlando Philharmonic was on the stage playing the score, we had an awesome, if minimalistic, set, we sold out our performances in the biggest performance venue in Orlando, and being able to work on one of my favorite shows ever written, in a truly professional setting, was by far one of the greatest experiences that I've ever been able to come by in my life. Faith Prince was actually the star of my second Broadway show that I ever saw, my friend, John Bucchino's, "A Catered Affair."

2. March of this year, my musical, "Dachau" premiered at the University of Central Florida. It was a beautiful production and I was extremely proud that I got to see my show done there.

3. I made lots of awesome songwriting friends in New York. Some of the coolest songwriters in New York City are also the nicest people in the world and they are going to have the greatest careers ever.

Well- this next year is an extremely promising year. I've got college stuff going on and rumor has it my musical, "Money Shot!: The Musical!" might be seen at the Boston Conservatory... More on that later ;)

Hope somebody finds some random enjoyment out of this blog.

Till 2010-
Alex

First Blog!

Hi, my name's Alexander Oyen, and every single time that I type my name into any kind of word processing system, it comes up as misspelled. I'm not sure what the pertinence of that last statement was- it was just something that might be somewhat interesting about myself.

I'm an aspiring songwriter (primarily for musical theatre), right now I'm based out of Orlando, Florida- but hopefully that'll be changing soon. I love writing words and music- it's the way that I express myself. I hope to be posting some of my songs up here (I'd appreciate any help that anybody can maybe give me- advice on how to post mp3 files?).

I've written and am in the process of writing about 7 musicals (give or take...?), but I also like writing individual songs. Here's a link to a music video that was made for one of my songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzTu57KWbys

I wrote that on guitar but I primarily work on piano when I'm writing for musical theatre.

One of my musicals, "Dachau," had a one-act workshop at the University of Central Florida.

All right- so this is just a first time thing. If you want to hear any of my stuff- email me. alexander.oyen@gmail.com.
